British Wool Coffins and Shrouds for Alkaline Hydrolysis
On 2nd March 2026, Scotland became the first UK country to grant permission for a new funerary method to be introduced. Alkaline Hydrolysis (also sometimes referred to as Water Cremation or Aquamation) uses a pressurised container with water that is mixed with an alkaline solution.
This method of cremation requires wool shrouds or coffins that break down completely during the process. We offer 100% Welsh wool felt shrouds that are suitable for water cremation which can be purchased here:
Since our launch in 2021, The Woollen Cwtch Company has applied an extensive range of skills and knowledge to create an expanding range of wool coffins and funeral supplies. Our very first coffins were created exclusively for babies and infants using strong, rigid wool frames. We have continued to invest in the development of rigid wool materials and are now able to produce our strongest ever wool boards. Our third generation of rigid wool boards have significantly increased weight bearing capabilities and have been designed for compatibility with alkaline hydrolysis.

Our Third Generation, Rigid Wool Boards
Made from certified British Wool, our third generation of rigid wool boards hold significantly increased weight bearing capabilities. They have been designed for compatibility with alkaline hydrolysis.

Naturally Strong
Our rigid wool boards are made from 100% natural materials. The main component is our Welsh wool felt fabric which we source from a local family farm here in Mid Wales.
